My GGGrandmother was Catherine Gaul of Kilkenny.
she married Richard Chanbers, also of Kilkenny, in
Howard County, Maryland. (Their son, William, also
married in Ho. Co. a child of two Kilkenny immig-
rants, Mathew Daly and Margaret Naddy). Catherine
Gaul (with her widowed mother and uncle and some
cousins or siblings) from New Ross on 3/31/1849
on board the barque John Bell. They arrived in
Baltimore on 5/14/1849, and were 15 miles west in
Howard County by 1850. Some of the family appear
to have moved to Norfolk VA thereafter. My mother's
notes indicated that the Gauls were from "Killacpex".
The genealogical office in Kilkenny indicates there
is no parish by that name, but indicate, "This was
taken perhaps to have been Killaspy. This townland
is part of the civil parish of Dunkitt, part of the
Catholic parish of Kilmacon." Or, "The family may have
resided at Killanaspig, in the civil parish of
Clonmore, in the Catholic parish of Mooncoin." They
indicated that the names Chambers and Gaul are
common in the district of Iverk (southwestern Kilkenny),
where these parishes are located.
