The collection I was referring to is on familysearch.org website. Under Germany they have a collection of Hessen Darmstadt city records, I believe the dates start late 1700's and go into the 1900's. I found a couple of Gaule's listed around the 1840's and 1850's in the section titled Aufnamen von burgern und beisassen 1822-1884 F-G (images 339to 342 of 342). There are several other records in the collection, including one titled Aufwanderungen where I think I found the name, although it has been a while since I searched it.
Mary Bertzel Gaul is my great great grandmother. I can't find anything on her parents after the 1850 census. I know her brother Jacob was listed with some of the Gaul family in one census, and I believe he is buried in Meigs county. I will email you. Thanks for replying, Margot!
