My GGGrandmother was Catherine Gaul of the Parish of Kilaspy, in SW County Kilkenny, Ire.She married fellow Kilkennyman, Richard Chambers circa 1850, but it is now known whether in Ire. or US.
Richard was naturalized as a US citizen in Baltimore on 27 Oct 1860. This record confirms his Irish nativity and proves he stated his intention to become a citizen on 1 Nov 1856.His naturalization was attested to by his brother-in-law, Stephen Gaul, identified as a citizen. His early home in Maryland may have been in Baltimore County, the birth place of his first child, William, possibly in the Milford Mill area.He settled, before 1870, near Ellicott City, in Howard County.
Catherine Gaul Chambers d. 6/17/1902, in the vicinity of Granite, in SW Baltimore County.
She was the child of Thomas Gaul (1794 - 12/3/1869 - burial place unknown) and Catherine unknown (1803 - 7/28/1868, burial place unknown).
The other children of Thomas and Catherine Gaul included: Thomas (b.1825 - d. 26 June 1855 - burial place unknown); Stephen (d. March 1886 - burial place unknown); andMichael (birth date unknown - d. by 1920 - burial place unknown).Little is known about the younger Thomas Gaul.
Stephen and Michael, however, filed notice of their intent to become citizens in the Baltimore Court of Common Pleas in 1854, and were naturalized in May, 1856.
Stephen (of Thomas) Gaul married (another) Catherine unknown and he died March 11, 1886.He is listed in a number of Baltimore City Directories that provide the following information. In 1859, he was a milkman,
living at 101 W. Mulberry St.; in 1870 he had a milk-house and a grocery store. In 1876, he had a grocery at 158 W. Madison, and his son Thomas J. was working there as a clerk. In 1887, his wife, Catherine, was shown as a widow, and in 1888, she was listed with another son Michael
J. and a Thomas Gaul at 404 E. Chase St.Thomas of Stephen appears to have died on 29 Jul 1885, at age 30.Thomas of Stephen appears in the 1870 Howard County Census listings, among the students shown at St. Charles College, shown as T. J. Gaule, age 14.As the Census was taken
on June 2, 1870, this is fits nicely as the correct age for the Thomas shown born June 26, 1855.Michael J. Gaul is listed as a Policeman, living on Ruskin Ave. in 1906, with children Jeanette; Stephen, Catherine (b. 1892); and James (b. 1901) (these children were Baptized at St. Gregory’s Church at 1542 N. Gilmore).By 1920, Michael had died. His wife, Emma, was listed at 4506 Reisterstown Rd.His son, James became an architect; daughter Catherine a book keeper; son Stephen a tailor who married Mozella unknown, and daughter Jeanette married Frank
Ruth, with a son, Frank Jr. who married Lois unknown.
Michael (of Thomas) Gaul has been located in no records after 1856.
Will be happy to share additional information.
