Correction from my last post: Louis and Edward are two people, not one. There should have been a comma between the two names.

As for the change from the spelling of Godet to Gaudet; it was spelled as it was sounded out or heard by both clergy and census takers. Over the years, GO became GAU, simple as that. My family always went by GAU, even though census records here in the States give GO as late as the 1930 census. So it was transcribed as it was heard by other (some non-French speaking).
