Gatton Name Origins
I live in St. Marys County MD, where there are ~100 Gattons in the phone book.According to the DAR name book and local legend, Gatton (Scottish for "by the goat pens") were goat hearders in Scotland.During one of the many Scottish uprisings, many Gattons were caught and either a) killed, b) sent to prison (Austrailia, where there are many famous Gattons!), or c) sent to the new world - that meant often landing in MD, here is St. Mary's county. The people from there founded a city here called Scotland, and from here spread out across the US.There are many in Baltimore of course, which is where I'm from originally.Anyway, that's the story told here and one day soon I will get to the local historical archives to search for more information.
