I know little about the name - it's uncommon in this country - only 4 entries in the London phone directory, and I'm related to 2 of them. I don't know my origins beyond my grandfather, Alfred Gatter, who was born in the East End of London in the 1880s. Suspect the name is probably German or Austrian in origin.
