Dear Peer - I just got your letter today. I was not able to access your web site for some reason. For such a short name there appear to be very few Gatters around. I had never run into another outside my inmmediate family until we saw a museum guard in Philadelphia some years ago with the Gatter surname, Now I know from this site that there are a lot of Gatters in Pa. My mother (not being a Gatter herself) was never able to tell me the origen of the name. I read an article several years ago in a medical research journel by a Gatter, and contacted him, and he said that he was English and that there were a fair number of Gatters in Cornwall. My father was Lachlen Stewart Gatter and born in New York in around 1892. I think that his father was Robert Gatter, also from New York. However, my sister, Julia Gatter Botel, is much more interested in geneology than am I, and I will refer her to to this site to add any more information that she may have.
