Hi, Anna.
Sorry for the long delay in responding.I just started back on the Gatten genealogy.Yes, this is a difficult family, especially in Belmont Co, OH.But it's worth a try, right?
(From my previous post):
Belmont Co, OH:
Precious Ann Gatten b ca 1809 mar George W. Sherwood on 2 Apr 1832.
(From my recent census printout):
1850 US Federal Census, Smith Twp, Belmont Co, OH:
George and Ann Sherwood, with family, are living next door to Thomas and Eleanor Gatten, with family.
1860 US Federal Census, Smith Twp, Belmont Co, OH:
Precious A. Sherwood is living with Thomas and Eleanor Gatten, along with Eleanor Gatten, 36, William Gatten, 8, and Thomas Gatten, 34.Eleanor and Thomas are listed in the 1850 Census as children of Thomas and Eleanor Gatten. But since William is listed immediately behind Eleanor, 36, I can't conclude that this could be an illegitimate child of the daughter or a youngest child of the mom.
None of the Sherwood children are living with Precious in her parents home in 1860.In 1850, some of Precious's children were quite young, which leads me to believe that George Sherwood died between 1850 and 1860, and the children were put up for guradianship. There are a few similar (children's) names living with other families in the 1860 Census for Smith and Goshen Twps.I haven't researched the Sherwood children as my focus first is on the Gattens.
I hope this helps.Have a great day,
Regards,
