Wes The following are my notes for Elisha Farris (Jr.) who is PROBABLE son of Elisha Farris and Mary Vaughan Farris, who were killed by Cherokee Indians near Gate City, Virginia in 1791. If I am correct, Elisha Farris, Jr. would have been a grandson of James Esom Farris, who left Virginia in 1779, with some of his sons, stayed in Davidson County (present-day Nashville, TN) and moved on to Lincoln County, KY/Va. Children of ELISHA FARRIS and MARY VAUGHN are: i. ELISHA5 FARRIS, JR., b. Abt. 1767, Russell County, Virginia; d. Kentucky; m. ANN LANKFORD, September 18, 1794, Lincoln County, Kentucky. Notes for ELISHA FARRIS, JR.: From Randall Farris & Sandra McIntire research This Elisha's parents are unknown at this time. It is POSSIBLE he is kin to Edward Farris, whose daughter Nancy married Nimrod Farris. Origin of Edward is unknown, but MAY be of the Washington County, Virginia Farris's. He could also be an unknown son of one of James Esom Farris' sons. 21 May 1794 Tax List Lincoln Co. KY 1 wm 21+, 1 horse. From Virginia Genealogist Vol. 25, No. 1, 1980 - BRITISH MERCANTILE CLAIMS 1775 - 1803 The books show indebtedness in the entries as follows, for Elisha Farris (Sr.), with the remarks that he had removed from Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties, Virginia, to "somewhere on the Clinch River, where he was killed by Indians." Further remarks said his family was now in Kentucky and "are probably able to pay". Halifax Store - Jun 1773 - 2 pounds, 8 shillings, 8 pence Halifax Store - Dec 1773 - bond at 12 pounds, 9 shillings, 6 pence. Pittsylvania Store - Dec 1773 - 12 pounds, 2 shillings Pittsylvania Store - 1774 - 5 pounds, 3 shillings, 6 pence From Don Chesnut <drches01@pop.uky.edu> research In 1823 Scott County, Kentucky lawsuit over his father, Elisha's estate, Elisha (Jr.) was one of the heirs listed. ANALYSIS / SUMMARY This Elisha, Elisha, Jr., is probably one of Elisha and Mary Farris's sons. Both parents were killed by Cherokee Indians in 1791 near Gate City, Virginia. Elisha was one of their older children and had already moved away from home. Elisha, Jr. appears with his kin, including his Grandfather, James Esom Farris, in Lincoln County, Kentucky during the 1790's. Also living with this Farris "clan" was Elisha's brother, Edward. It has been noted by another researcher that some of Elisha and Mary's surviving children were living in Kentucky and "able to pay" debts incurred by the elder Elisha Farris. The following county record indicates Elisha Farris, Jr. MAY have been in Whitley County, Kentucky from 1815-1819. COUNTY CLERK MINUTES, WHITLEY COUNTY, KENTUCKY, courtesy of Stephen H. Broyles Information pertaining to Elisha Farris may be made by a review of Whitley County Clerk Minutes, Book 1, from 1818-1822 (Whitley County was organized from part of Knox County in 1818): June Term 1818 p. 20-21: Ordered that Reese Gatliff take the child formerly sworn to him by Nancy Cadwell by the name of Charles and keep the same by his entering into bond with security conditioned as the law directs whereupon the sd Reese Gatliff came into court with Aron Gatliff as his security and acknowledged their bond payable to the commonwealth in sum of $200 conditioned as the law directs. Ordered that Reese Gatliff pay ELISHA FARIS Forty dollars for keeping a Child by the name of Charles 3 years or better. January Term 1819 p. 48: Ordered that ELISHA FARIS list of taxable property be received & he released from fine & triple tax. ...You will note that I had the same account, concerning Reese Gatliff, and young Charles Gatliff. Charles appears to be one of the illegitimate children of Reese, who never appears to have been married. Elvin E. Farris Notify Administrator about this message?
