Hi Ron,

The only documented captives that I have seen are Christiana, Cornelius, James, and a daughter Tess (I'll explain that later). A daughter died enroute to Detroit and this has been mentioned in a letter written by Adelaide Berry and letters of James Langford Gatliff, a grandson of Charles Gatliff.

James Langford Gatliff wrote to Draper March 15, 1866:

"My grandmother and three children, my father and 2 other children, the youngest child died on the way to Detroit."

And on April 25, 1866 he wrote:

"James and Cornelius were the names of the 2 children that survived the captivity; Cornelius was my father."

And May 18, 1866 wrote:

"When my grandmother was taken prisoner I never heard how many Indians and British there was but I suppose there was a good many. My recollection is that the fort made little resistance as the men were nearly all absent from the forts. Grandmother and 3 or 4 children was taken. My father and my unkel James, and the youngest one at the breast, it starved to death on their march to Detroit. My grandmother stated they suffered greatly on their march. They never was adopted. My father I think was 4 years old when they captured, James was still older. I do not recollect the name of the Indian leader was, but It was not Logan. There was the Girtys that was white men that had… the one of their names was Simon Girty. I do not know how many prisoners were taken. Both forts were taken at or about the same time. Part of the prisoners fell to the Indians and part to the British."

Of course in the last letter he says 3 or 4 children, but only can name two and the daughter.

The Berry letter talks about the daughter with a cancer in her mouth who died. The prisoner returns at Detroit and Montreal only show Christiana with Cornelius and James. Reese must not have been captured. He could have been out with his father when the fort was captured.

I'm not really sure where the "Speed" name comes from. I see many mentions of him, but find nothing on him. He's not listed in the family bible. I think people confuse the "Rees" Galtiff in the bible as "Speed" Gatliff.

The order of births in the bible are Rees (1774), James (1775), Cornelius (1777), and "Tis" (1779). The second bible page in the Gatliff supplement Has Rees listed first but the writing is a bit fancy and might look like Speed, Speer, or Spees, but it's actually Rees again. (fancy R) I don't think Speed ever existed hence the reason people cannot find information on him. The name of the daughter who died is probably not Sis, but Tis. It looks to be Tis in the bible (both pages, Tis and tis.) which is probably a corruption of the girl name Tess. Just my thoughts on this.

Many of the names are mispelled in the bible i.e. Curnellus (Cornelius), Tis (Tess), Rees (Reese), Christana, (Christiana), etc.
