William Crittenden Webb, Senior married three times, and his third wife was Frances Smith, a daughter of Major Maurice Smith (my apparent maternal gggg-grandfather) and his wife Catherine Carter (Catherine Carter's first husband had been Humphrey Jones).William C. Webb, Senior would have been a sister of your Anne Crittenden Webb.William Crittenden Webb, Junior, a son of William "Senior" and his first wife Jane Vivion (apparently) married twice, as I recall, and William "Junior's" second wife was Patsy Smith, who was a sister of the above Frances Smith (so both were daughters of Major Maurice Smith). As I recall, William C. Webb, Senior and your Catherine C. Webb had a brother who was named Richard Crittenden Webb who married a Bennett (among other siblings). These Webbs eventually lived in the Spotsylvania/Orange Co., VA area.
My current/latest information shows that the son of Maurice Smith and Catherine Carter named John Smith (who married Sarah Waller, a daughter of Judge Benjamin Waller) was the apparent biological father of a "Smith infant/toddler" who was taken-in by John and Mary (Bennett) Brown before 1820 (after Mrs. Sarah (Waller) Smith had died). That infant/toddler was then named Smith W. Brown, and he is my maternal gg-grandfather.It appears that the John Brown who took-in this child was a son of the older John Brown who lived in Essex Co., VA and who married Mary Kidd.It appears that it was John and Mary (Kidd) Brown's grandson named Barrett or Barnett Brown (NOT Bennett Brown, as I had incorrectly stated in my earlier e-mail) who was associated with the guardianship of Kemp Gatewood in 1827.It appears that Christopher T. Browne took-in Kemp Gatewood and that Barrett/Barnett Brown provided surety for that (if I understood the document...that was on microfilm at the library...correctly.It seems that Christopher T. Browne was actually a member of an unrelated Browne family...versus the family of John Brown, Barrett/Barnett Brown, etc....but these two unrelated Browne/Brown families had become closely associated in Essex Co., VA.
The John Brown who married Mary Kidd lived very near to Thomas Dunn and his wife Jane Gatewood in Essex.Sometime between 1810 and 1820, as I recall, John Brown sold some or all of his property in Essex to the widow Mrs. Jane (Gatewood) Dunn (Thomas Dunn had died).I do not know how Kemp Gatewood was related to Jane Gatewood.
I went to the Library of VA the other day, and I found this:
There was a 16 Jun 1817 deed that mentioned Francis Smith, Kemp Gatewood, John Trible (note: my Brown family had married into the Trible/Tribble family many years earlier), Lucy Bagby and Henry Young (a descendant of the "first/older" Henry Young who had married Rachel Smith from my Smith family many years earlier).I do not know who this Francis Smith was, but there was a Francis Smith on the 1810 Essex census.I also do not know if this Kemp Gatewood on the above 1817 record was the same Kemp Gatewood who was taken-in by Christopher T. Browne ten years later in 1827....but this may have been two different men.
There were several Gatewoods listed on the various 1783 Essex Co., VA tax lists (there was a list for each of the five tax districts in 1783).You can access these lists here:

A "chart/file" on "your" Henry Gatewood and his wife is here:

I have done no independent research on your Henry Gatewood, so I do not know if the above "chart/file" is accurate.
