Roy, I haven't been able to get that book yet, but I've been searching around on the internet and trying to figure out how Josephine got to Travis County Texas and married at 16 in October 1868, and Atwell also ended up in Texas and married in August 1868 in Hood County Texas. I'm wondering if maybe Josie went with them to California and back to Texas, stopped off in Travis County and she stayed there, but can't find anything definitive. However I did find this very interesting link, maybe you and other Gatewood researchers have seen it maybe not

The Diary of Ruth Shackelford From Clark County Missouri to California Via the Overland Trail, 1865
She makes several references to "Att" and "Ann" who I believe must be her in-laws, Atwell and his wife Ann Shackleford Gatewood. Are you familiar with this?
