Jackie, My GGrandfather was Nathan (Oscar) Gates, all the Census say he was born in Ontario, to American parents. Do you suppose, just maybe the census takers made a mistake and it should have been Ontario, NY. I do know his parents were born in either NY (census) or CT. (death cert) and he was born Dec. 16, 1838. I'd sure like to find a connection somewhere.
