ELIAS-7 Gates was born January 29, 1788 in Rutland, Vermont, a son of Nehemiah-6 and Sarah (Whipple) (Smith) Gates. NEHEMIAH-6 Gates was born May 15,1748 in Preston, CT, son of Nehemiah-5 & Elizabeth (Baker) Gates NEHEMIAH-5 Gates was born March 17,1723 in Preston, CT, son of Stephen-4 & Hannah (Woodward) Gates STEPHEN-4 Gates was born about 1690 in Stow, MA, son of Stephen-3 & Jemima (Benjamin) Gates STEPHEN-3 Gates was born July 16,1665 in Lancaster, MA, son of Stephen-2 & Sarah (Woodward) Gates STEPHEN-2 Gates was born about 1634, son of Stephen-1 & Ann (Veare) Gates Stephen-1 Gates immigrated from England to Massachusetts in 1638 on the “Diligent” with his wife Ann and three children. Many Gates families in America are descendants of Stephen Gates. In 1898 Charles Otis Gates published an extensive work on the genealogy of Stephen Gates which contained an inaccurate description of Stephen’s English ancestry. Several subsequent research works have disproved this reported English lineage, but until recently none had been able to shed any light on his true ancestry. The January 2006 issue (Volume 160) of "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register" contains an article by Edward J. Harrison whose extensive research indicates with reasonable certainty that Stephen Gates was the son of Eustace Gates and Rose Wright, daughter of Martin and Elizabeth Wright. The author has found that in some records Stephen’s father’s name was written as Eustace Jaques or Eustace Jayuettes; however the surname appears as Gates in all extant baptismal records for his children. Eustace and Rose Gates resided in Coney Weston, a small parish in Suffolk located about sixteen miles south of Hingham, Norfolk where Stephen Gates and Ann Veare were married in 1628. In addition to the work by Edward J. Harrison, the main sources for the information shown above are as follows: "Stephen Gates of Hingham and Lancaster, Massachusetts and His Descendants." (1898) by Gates, Charles Otis "Stephen Gates of Hingham, Lancaster and Cambridge, Massachusetts and Some of His Descendants.” by Torrey, Clarence Almon.
