Hi Audrey,
I have been searching for the father of Jacob H. Gates for many years and have looked at the information you posted several times and I believe I have a solution to my search. You have the second child of Timothy and Susannah Gates as Jacob W. Gates.I believe this should actually be my Jacob H. Gates.I have several reasons to believe this and I would like to list them for you.
1.My Jacob's first child's name was Timothy Joseph Gates. It was common to name the first child after the grandfathers. Jacob's wife Sarah McMinn's Father's name was Joseph McMinn. This would make my Jacob's father's name Timothy.
2.Jacob H. and Sarah Ann Gates had a farm in Clark County, Missouri. One of the twin sisters Susanna married Edward Williams and they had several children in Clark County, Missouri.
3.The second twin sister Elizabeth married a John Woods and they had one child in Clark County, Missouri.
4.In the 1870 census there was a David Gates married to a Rebbecca and living next door or very close to my Jacob H. and would fit the age of his youngest brother.
5.My Jacob H. married Sarah Ann McMinn in Washington County, Ohioon October 6th 1850 and moved to Clark County in 1851. (Please note there is no Waterford County but there is a town in Washington County by the name of Waterford.)
6.My Jacob H. was born on the 25th of November 1818.
(This would come close to the 1817 year you have for Jacob W.)
I have for many years believed my Jacob H. Gates father's name was Timothy but have been unable to prove it.I would very much like to have you input on this as this would be a very, very important link for my family.
Please post me back and let me know what you think,
Thank you,David
