I am searching for information about the wives of Denison Gates (1794-1871) of Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA. Reportedly, Denison was the son of Oliver and Jemima FREEMAN Gates. Denison was born in New York and likely died in Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., PA. He is buried there in Harkness Cemetery.

I believe Denison Gates had two wives and both of them were named Elizabeth. Denison’s first wife was born ca. 1798 and died March 1840. She is buried in Harkness Cemetery.

1840 census of Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania lists:
Gates Denison 1000001 1001

The 1840 census lists the household of Denison Gates with two young children and a teenage female (born 1820-1825) who may be helping to care for Denison’s young children. The two children born to Denison and Elizabeth (surname unknown) Gates are believed to be Marcus A. Gates (1836-1905) and Harriet E. GATES (1838-aft. 1879).

My Berry family history states Elizabeth BERRY married Denison Gates. I believe she was his second wife. Elizabeth BERRY was the daughter of John S. and Elizabeth ELLIOT BERRY. It is believed Elizabeth BERRY was born in Otsego Co., New York ca. 1812.

1850 census of Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania lists:
Gates Denison 55 M Farmer NY
Gates Elizabeth 39 F NY
Gates Marcus 14 M PA
Gates Harriet 12 F PA
Gates Ethan 6 M PA
Gates Henry 2 M PA

The 1850 census lists wife Elizabeth born ca. 1811 in NY and two sets of children separated by about 6 years. The two youngest children are Ethan A. Gates (ca. 1844–aft. 1879) and Henry W. Gates (1847-1928).

1870 census of Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania lists:
Gates Denison 76 M farmer NY
Gates Elizabeth 57 F housekeeper NY
Gates E. A. 26 M farm laborer PA
Gates H. W. 22 M farm laborer PA
Gates Lola 5 F at home PA

The 1870 census lists wife Elizabeth born ca. 1813 in NY. The older children (Marcus and Harriet) left the Gates household and the younger children remained to help operate the farm. Lola Gates is likely the daughter of Marcus and Alice FITCH Gates, granddaughter of Denison.

Denison Gates died 30 Nov 1871 and is buried next to his first wife, Elizabeth, in Harkness Cemetery.

1880 of Springfield Twp., Bradford Co., Pennsylvania lists:
Henry W. GATES Self M Male W 32 PA NY NY
Dellie H. GATES Wife M Female W 25 NY NY PA
Freeman Gates Son S Male W 1 PA PA PA
Elizabeth Gates Mother W Female W 68 NY MA VT

Henry W. Gates remained on the old homestead in Springfield Township and is enumerated there in 1880, together with his mother, Elizabeth. She is listed as born in NY ca. 1812; the birthplace of her father is Massachusetts and the birthplace of her mother is Vermont. My BERRY family history records agree that Elizabeth BERRY’s father (John) was born in Massachusetts and her mother (Elizabeth) was born in Vermont. So, based on the census data and my family history records, I am fairly certain that the second wife of Denison Gates was Elizabeth BERRY.

I have not yet found death or burial information for Elizabeth BERRY Gates. A likely place of burial for her would be Harkness Cemetery where Denison and son Henry Walton Gates are both interred; however, no gravestone for Elizabeth BERRY Gates has been recorded.

I am searching for information about Elizabeth, the first wife of Denison Gates, born ca. 1798 and died March 1840. I would like to know her surname. Also, I am searching for information about the date/place of death/burial of Elizabeth BERRY Gates, believed to be the second wife of Denison Gates.
