Barry, The only legal document I have is a certificate for the birth of Thankful Gates, July 9, 1769, daughter of Oldham Gates, sometimes called Capt. Gates, and his 3rd wife, Thankful Adams. If you belong to NEHGS, you can read the published vital records for many of the Massachusetts towns online and find the dates and places of Oldham Gates' marriages and the births of his children. (As you know, there were other people named Oldham Gates and our Oldham was not the one who was at Bunker Hill.) From the Kings Historical Society in Nova Scotia, I got the births and marriages of some of the children of Thankful Gates and her husband, Paul Crocker, Jr. On Google Books and HeritageQuest, you can read the following books in which Oldham Gates is mentioned: "History of Kings County, Nova Scotia" by Arthur Eaton "History of the County of Annapolis" by William Calnek "A Genealogy and History of the Chute Family in America" by William Chute "The Dana Family in America" by Elizabeth Ellery Dana "History of Spencer, Massachusetts" "Records of the Gates Families of America" by Robert Gates "Stephen Gates of Hingham" by Charles Gates On Google, type in -Charming Molly, 1760- and you'll find that Oldham Gates' name is on the list of people who went to Annapolis County from Massachusetts in the summer of 1760. The information is from a contemporary diary. Also, the Web site for the Town of Middleton, Nova Scotia says that that town used to be called Gates' Ferry in honor of Capt. Oldham Gates. The "History of Spencer, Massachusetts," printed in 1860, says (page 260) that Capt. Jonathan Wood came from Upton and purchased from Oldham Gats his farm, now owned by Eber. Snow and son. Sadly, it doesn't say when that sale occurred. Oldham Gates' wives were Mehitible Trowbridge, Patience Bartlett, Thankful Adams (my ancestor), Jennie Dow or Jane Drew, and Jemima Potts, widow. I can't find the dates of his marriage to Jennie and Jemima. *I would like to have the date of death and place of burial for his 3rd wife, Thankful Adams Gates. Oldham's will - written a year or so before he died?- lists Jennie as his wife, so Jennie must have died before Oldham did and then he married Jemima Potts, widow. Did Jennie and Jemima have children with Oldham Gates? I did find a step-daughter of Capt. Oldham Gates - Elizabeth Potts, marrying Garrett van Buskirk. The van Buskirk family were Loyalists from New Jersey. Samuel van Buskirk, son of this couple, married Mary, a daughter of Paul Crocker. Are you in Nova Scotia? If so, you might go to the Middleton Cemetery to get information. Oldham Gates, Jr. (1765- 1850) is said to be buried there. Where is Capt. Oldham Gates buried? How many of his five wives are buried with him? (Mehitible and Patience would be buried in Massachusetts.) Jemima Potts is referred to as a widow. I found no other people named Potts in the early records of Kings and Annapolis counties. There was a John Potter at Clements, NS. The Chute genealogy, page 68, says that Jemima Potts survived Capt. Gates and died around 1816 at the home of Thomas Gates, son of Jonas Gates. Capt. Oldham Gates' will was written in 1797(?) with Jennie named as his wife. If he died in 1798, he was married to Jemima only briefly. Or, maybe he was married to Jemima when the will was written and the penmanship caused the name Jemima to look as though it were the name Jennie. Who was Jemima Potts? This might be worth a look. "The Annals of Newtown in Queens County, New York and also Long Island Families" by D. Fanshaw in 1852, page 397 says that Samuel Alburtis m. June 1, 1724 Elizabeth VanDerVoort and had a daughter named Jemima Alburtis (no date of birth given) who married John Potts. On FamilySearch, I found that someone had entered this information, giving the date of Jemima's marriage to John Potts as August 15, 1761 at the Presbyterian Church of Newtown, NY. This was not a vital record and there was no citation given. Another entry at FamilySearch lists the Elizabeth Potts who married Garrett van Buskirk of Aylesford, Nova Scotia as being the child of this couple. That's all I have now, Susan Notify Administrator about this message?
