Joesph Gates, Pike Co, MS and Baton Rouge, LA

I am studying all the Gates found in early Pike Co, MS, hoping to find a link or more especially the parents and siblings of my Permelia Gates Dunaway.
There was a Joseph Gates listed on the 1825, 1831, and 1835 tax lists for Pike Co, MS. He is listed on the 1840 census of Pike Co: 1 male under 5; 1 male age 15-20; 1 male 20-30; 1 male 30-40; 1 female under 5; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 20-30; and 1 female 30-40. There are possibly two families in this household. Joseph is also listed on two state census indexes, 1841 and 1845. He probably moved between 1845 and 1850 as no Gates families show up in 1850 Pike Co. Is this Joseph Gates the one who later shows up in 1850 Baton Rouge, LA? The Joseph in Baton Rouge is age 49 born GA; his wife's name read variously as: Yatitish/Zalitiea/Talitish/or Tabitha, age 44 born MS; Sarah, age 28 MS; and James, age 15 MS. Any help will be very much appreciated.
