I was in Salt Lake City last week and part of the time I was trying to find the parents of Stephenson Gates who was b. in 1807 probably in Barren Co., KY.
I found in the census records for 1810 a William Gates in Barren Co, in 1820 he was in Monroe Co, probably he didn't move, Monroe Co. was formed in 1820. In 1830 he and Stephenson Gates were in Jackson Co., TN. The state line was in dispute for some time. In 1840 William was back in Monroe Co.,KY. I also tracked him in the tax records from 1820 - 1826 and from 1837 - 1847 when he disapeared from the records, may have died or moved on. He had property on Coles Creek and Mill Creek in Monroe Co.
This William was b. about 1783, his middle initial may have been C. as it was in one of the tax records.
