John...I've sent you an email, but thought that this might be an appropriate spot also.

My name is Richard Lee Gates and my grandfather was Charles Quincy Gates and the son of Quincy Gates. When I was about 15 or so, we visited Ernest and his sons Lyle and Walter in Canova, SD and they were introduced as cousins.

Charles Gates married a Sarah (Sadie) Ann Campbell of IA and had nine children...one died rather young and I remember that my dad (James (Jim)Michael Gates didn't like talking about it. After living in Canova, SD for 20-some years, they moved to Kadot, WI in 1912. Around 1918, Charles again moved the family to Beloit, WI and started work at Fairbanks Morrse (?), where they made large diesel engines. It was reported that he and another worker were playing a little rough and Charles was hit in the chest by a thrown hammer. He ended up in Beloit Hospital and died shortly of pneumonia in 1919. He was buried in a Beloit cemetery without a headstone (they were dirt poor), but there was supposedly a marker. My cousin and I tried to find the grave a few years ago, but I believe that the marker had been disturbed and we never found it.

Sarah, his wife, born 9-18-1875, raised the eight children as best she could in a house on Hackett St, across from the golf course. My dad, Jim Gates, said that most of Charles sons (Earl Gates born 01-12-1893, Robert Lee Gates born ???, and my dad Jim Gates born 3-7-1908) moved away from home to find work and they would send money home for Sarah and the kids whenever they could. I remember dad telling me that sometimes things were so bad that they took their lunch to school all they had was bread smeared with lard. ...things must have been rough. Eventually, Sarah went to live with her daughter (Viola Gates/Huber/Wagner/Eible/Cooper born 4-4-1910) who cared for her in Orangevale, CA until she died on 2-15-1967 and is buried in Roseville, CA. I tried to find the grave a couple of years ago, but didn't have a lot of time then. I do now...and I'll find it. Actually Viola was married six or seven times and was very pretty and headstrong. She always felt that she could do anything that a man could do...and usually did.

Let's see, the children that I haven't mentioned besides Earl, Robert, Jim, and Viola are:

Mae Gates born 6-19-1895 died 10-26-59 somewhere in Washington state...daughters Deloris and Gloria

Ruby Gates/Nelligan born 6-11-1906 died 1-29-99
Married Rev Nelligan (they met in the Salvation Army, where Rev was the Chaplin). They had three sons, William, Ernie, and Charles, who died early. They lived in Palo Alto, CA for many years and then Lake Almanor, CA and ended up in San Jose, CA where she died in 1999. Nice lady! Reminded me of her mother Sarah (sweet, but at the same time strong).

Lola Gates/Wehrung born 2-25-1914 died 3-1982 pretty much stayed in Beloit, WI where she grew up. She married William Wehrung, who owned a bar in Beloit. When she later divorced him, she married his brother Babe. Uncle Babe still lives in Beloit (in the country). Lola had one child...Ruby Wehrung (Pug to me). Pug just recently died. Her and her second husband (Muril Holmbeck) had no children and still lives in Beloit. Her first husband (name escapes me now) died many years ago while trying to put out a fire on his new big rig that he had just bought.

Dale Gates born 6-6-1919 died 1-1984 married a Juanita and had a daughter (whose name escapes me). Dale was the youngest and resided in Danville, CA. Dale was a big man (all the Gates were over 6'1-2"..except my dad, Jim who was 5'10") Earl, Jim, and Dale were dark complected and had hook noses. I was told that there was an Indian somewhere in our past, but I haven't found it yet.

I also have some info about Frank Gates, who like his father Quincy and brother Charles, came back to Wisconsin from SD.

Send me an email or tel...rgates1@starstream.net 916-408-7066 Richard Gates
