Bill, Sharon CT and Amenia NY are sister cities. In fact, some churches had their burial grounds across the border. I am researching a parallel line, perhaps, (Malachi and Joseph GATES). I am pretty sure I have seen the name Lovina in my research. My first recollection was proven faulty (Lodema vs Lovina). A Lodenia (spelling?) GATES was dismissed (by letter?) from the Baptist Church in Deleware County (NY). A Malachi GATES was also dismissed from there in 1815 One of my notes on a scrap of paper indicates where Malachi and Lodema are buried. Malachi and Lodema buried a son Ezra (7 yrs, 4 mos) in 1793 in Sharon (Winchell Moutnain Burying Ground). Malachi lived in Amenia in 1790 and 1800. The 1790 census had one male under 16, two males over 16, and two females (Lodema and Lovina??) in the household. He also fought in the Revolutionary War (Van Rensaeller's Regiment). A Joseph GATES also subscibed to the building of the "Red Meeting House" aka "Carmel in the Nine Partners" aka Amenia Church of Christ in the Nine Parnters" on FEB 6, 1750. Herman GATES fought in the War of 1812. Malachi next appears on the 1820 census. He was living next door to a Joseph GATES in Franklin, Deleware County NY. Malachi does not appear on the 1830 census. Joseph remains in Franklin for the 1830 census. A Ms Pam Brown posted in the Ancestry Board looking for info on Malachi "Looking for information on Elisha Collins and Lovina GATES, md in Amenia, Dutchess Co. NY 20 MAR 1785. Was Lovina's father Malachi Gates? Any info, especially on Malachi and family appreciated. Thanks, Pam" A Ms. Jeanine Gentis also posted on the Ancestry Board. "Looking for information on Lovina Gates, who married Elisha Collins March 20, 1785 in Dutchess Co, New York. Twelve children born in NY, PA and VT. Need parents and sibling information if known." I believe my GGGF Joseph D. GATES (b abt 1828 in NY) is the son of Joseph Gates (b. abt 1790 in NY)m who is the son/nephew of Malachi GATES (b abt 175? ). Joseph(1) is the only Joseph GATES that has a male under 16 on the NY census in 1830. Joseph D. Gates first appears in the 1860 Census for Williamsport (Lycoming County) PA. His children area Herman and Henrietta. This is as far as family legend supports. The 1850 Census of Lycoming County also lists a Joseph Gates, however, he was too old to be my Joseph D. GATES. He has two children living with them, also named Herman and Henrietta. They are also too old to be Joseph D. Still, there was obviously some relation. Perhaps my Joseph D. was an elder son, and named his children after his brother and sister. Since both of these Josephs were born in NY according to the censuses, I researched there. The 1830 census only has one Joseph that had a male child in the right column. That was in Franklin, Deleware Co, NY. Joseph there at least in 1830, owned a store/post office and moved to "Albany". A Harmon?? (Herman ?) GATES was also killed there by a falling tree around 1818. Joseph is also listed on the 1820 census. Possibly affiliated families are BENTON, GATES, WOODARD, and COLLINS. Christian recurring names are Benton, Clayton, Herman, Henrietta, Walter, William, Joseph, and Orrin. Family later moved to NJ, then to Herkimer Co, NY, then down to FL in the early 1900s. Strike any memories or thought processes?? Please feel free to communicate directly by e-mail, but also post for future researchers. Notify Administrator about this message?
