I, too am looking for information on a James Gates (my ggg-grandfather) who lived in Charles Co. MD, but later than your James Gates.
My James Gates married Christine Mumford (date unknown) and had 11 children, the youngest of which, Robert (born March 17, 1817 in Port Tobacco, MD), is my gg-grandfather. James had a brother, Charles. I have a copy of Charles' will that mentions James and his daughter(Charles' neice), Ann.
I would be very interested in determining whether my James is related to your James. It seems likely since they both lived in Charles Co. MD. Please let my know if you see a connection in your information.
