Levi Gates, who was the son of Alfred Gates and Lucretia Tubbs, was born Jan. 9, 1809 Broome Co., Lisle, NY and married Syerna Ellis and Sally Woodward. He is the father of Ransom Gates born March 27, 1832 (married Abigal A. Ellis 1853), Elizabeth, Levi, and Sarane. Levi died March 13, 1862 in Steuben Co., IN.
Maybe you attach to Levi, Jr. Sally died in 1873 and Syerna died in 1902-so possibly he married Sally first. I do know he was married to Sally in 1860-according to the census in Steuben Co., IN and Sarane was listed as a male. It is entirely possible that it is another Levi, since Levi,Jr. was listed as 13 on the 1860 Census-born ca. 1847 in IN. He would have had to return to Broome Co., NY. Levi Gates was a common name in this family-it was also the name of Alfred Gates (1772-1859) father.
