Thank you Sharon for the information in "Pioneers of Massachusetts" by Pope. Unfortunately I have to disagree with him regarding the number of Children Stephen GATES and Ann VEARE brought with them on the "Diligent" to America in Aug 1638. We know from manyother sources that he brought three children, who would have been Elizabeth (b. abt 1630 in England), Stephen Jr. (b. abt 1634 in England), and Marie (Mary), bp. 15 Oct 1636 Hingham, Co. Norfolk, England. All of their subsequent children were born in America. The first child, elizabeth m. 29 Nov 1647 Hingham, MA John LAZELL/LASSELL.
Two of the sources for the three children who came with their parents are "Stephen GATES of hingham and lancaster, Mass. by Charles Otis Gates, 1898. While I disagree with C.O. Gatges about the English Ancestry of Stephen GATES and his wife's name, I do believe he was correct on the number of children Stephen brought over. A muchmore accurate source is "Stephen Gates of hingham, Lancaster and Cambridge and Some of His Descendants, by Clarence Almon Torrey, Ph.B., published in several vols. of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, starting in Jul 1966. I am concentrating my research on finding proof of the English ancestors of Stephen GATES. Cheers, Les Mellott
