Notes for JOHN BEDFORD GATES:
The father of John Bedford Gates moved from North Carolina to Mississippi about the year 1800, and located near the Pearl River. At that time John Bedford was about 5 years old. ( John Bedford was actually born on December 8, 1809) His father built a log house and cleared a feild. After the field was cleared there were many logs left upon the land and he gave a log rolling.
There were but few settlers in the county at that time, but they were always glad to assist one another in house raisings and log rollings. When john Bedford was ready for his log rolling he sent word to all
the settlers for several miles around that he would have a log rolling on a certain day, and also a quilting. On the day appointed a large number of men, women, and childrencame. The men soon went to the field to engage in rolling the logs. Some of the women engaged in quilting;others were preparing the dinner. The children were playing some distance from the house in a large tract of woods.
While they were playing a large anmal jumped from a tree upon John Bedford, knocking him to the ground and began dragging him away. The other ran screaming to the house and told of what had happened to John Bedford. They said a large yellow dog had jumped out of a tree upon him and was dragging him off.
The women knew at once that it was a panther and not a dog. They blew a horn and the men came running from the field. When told of what had happened they grabbed thier guns, called the dogs, and went to the place where the children said John Bedford was caught.
In those days men carried their guns whereever they went as protection against indians and wild animals. The dogs took the trail and about half a mile from where the children said the animal got John Bedford they stopped where a pile of leaves was lying against a large log and started to bark. The men hurried to the place and looking at the pile of leaves discovered a hand of John Bedford thrust out from the leaves. A man caught his hand and lifted him up. They supposed he was dead. He was very bloody around his neck and was unconscious, but they soon discovered he was alive. They carried him to the house and washed the blood from his neck and found there was a hole in his throat which extented through his windpipe, and that his breath came partly from the hole in his windpipe.
They then took soom warm tallow and pressed it into the wound. He was badly bruised and there were claw marks on his arms and shoulders, but none of them were serious. After dressing his wounds with tallow, they wrapped him in warm blankets and put him to bed. In a few hours he awoke and was fully concscious.
After John Bedford had been put to bed, the men set the dogs on the trail of the panther and treed it about a mile from John Bedford had been found. The panther was soon killed.
John Bedford got well without any further treatment and in the year 1835 located in the northern part of the county. A beautiful spring hewn out of a solid rock on land he entered still bears the name of John Bedford Springs.

This story was taken out of " A History of Simpson County" By Bee King Compiled by Frances B. Krechel. She gave credit to Collins Gates for telling her the story. He was a grandson of
John Bedford Gates
