Frances, I respect the fact that you have been researching for 25 years but the fact is you can't rewrite "History"! Also I beg to differ with you Robert Cady Gates is not a banker for all Gates! He is a noted Author of several books on the History Of The Gates Family In America and it is my opinion that he has done more for Gates researchers then anyone in history. As to your letter from Thomas Gates to General Horatio Gates. The only way I would even be interested in reading this letter is if it is handwritten, signed and documented. I do not know anything about Robert Gates having a brother Samuel. I have never heard of Samuel but I do know he had a brother "Thomas" and Horatio was fond of Thomas children. The information I have indicates that Robert and Dorothy married just before Horatio was born. She was supposedly pregnant at the time. Horatio born July 1727. If the information you have about Robert and Dorothy married 1725 is documented then you are proving historians wrong. Horace Walpole's Journal made 1778 is practically the only surviving information on Horatio's early years. In 1766 Horatio wrote that both of his parents were nearly 80 years of age. Shortly after writing this his father died and mother died two years later June 1768. I would like to quote; "Kings and Countrys" Horatio was the only child of Dorothy's second marriage. This is what I based my information on that I related to you. My Grandmother was wrong; educated as she was I am not related to General Horatio Gates. I do have documentation! I do not wish to discuss or argue with you any further as to whether General Horatio Gates had "Any" siblings unless you have documentation.
