To Sally Gordon, Uriah GATES (my gggrandfather) did not marry in Fayette County, just got his license there. Tipton (Indiana) Daily Tribune, 10/5/1905, on his marriage to Martha Ann "Patsey" CHINN: "...Mr. and Mrs. Uriah Gates, pioneers of Indiana. They were united in marriage at Indianapolis in 1822, and as the marriage was the first nuptial event to be celebrated in that settlement it was made the occasion of a great deal of social pleasure...The groom had his troubles before the proper credentials for the ceremoney were secured, as he was forced to go to Connersville [Fayette County] after the license, walking the distance of sixty-three miles in the cold January weather." This Uriah GATES is supposed to be the son of Uriah GATES and Rebecca unknown who also had another son David GATES and a daughter, nothing else known. I have checked the possible Uriah GATES/SHATTUCK connection to Uriah GATES above, inconclusive so far. There are several other Uriah GATES one can find. My guess: all have some common heritage considering the name. Will post anything found!
