Many N. American Gastons trace back to a groups of immigrants from N. Ireland starting about 1715-20. Many of the immigrants of this first wave claim they descend from a French Huguenot, "Jean Gaston". While the basic legend is that this Huguenot went to Scotland (probably during the 1600s) and his sons went to Co. Antrim, N. Ireland. While this legend is very widespread, there is no actual record of Jean Gaston to be found at this point. Many have tried, believe me. The closest we have come to anything prior to the 1700s first immigrant wave is a group of Antrim householders from 1669. Odds are they are the parents or grandparents of the immigrant generation. Their past remains unclear.
You would be well to see if you can find out from whom your Hugh descends. If you can trace his line back to the early 1700s or late 1600s, there is a chance to possibly go further back.
