James Gaston ran the historic mill now known as GASTON MILLS HISTORIC PARK in Columbiana County Ohio. His son Philander took over the mill from his father.
One of the other sons of James Gaston and Elizabeth Kilgore was HUGH GASTON. Hugh married Elizabeth Stoakes and moved to Tama County Iowa with her family. Hugh ran a sawmill at West Union, a small town that once was on the edge of the present town of Traer Iowa. (The Tama County town West Union no longer exists).
Hugh Gaston's sister joined him but later moved to Leon Iowa in Decatur County. His younger brother JOHN GASTON also joined him and worked as a sawyer in Hugh's mill at West Union. When the Civil War broke out, John enlisted with several close friends into the 14th Iowa Infantry Company G.
John and his companions fought at Fort Donelson and at the Hornets' Nest at Shiloh, where all but John were taken prisoners of war.
