HPNotes:Wesley Gassaway’s daughter, Sarah, married George Washington POWELL (1847-).
George is shown 1850 Census De Kalb Co., Alabama at age 3 with his mother Patience POWELL.
He is shown 1860 Census of Marshall Co., Alabama living with his presumed grandfather Lewis
POWELL (1779-) and Lewis’ daughter Edney Powell-Thrasher family.
In 1864 a child John W. POWELL was born presumably to George & Sarah.A marriage record is found
for 1867 in Chickasaw Co., Mississippi for G. W. Powell to Sarah A. Gassaway. I have not seen the
original of this record and presume the date 1867 is correctly transcribed and that George was age 17
when John W. was born.
George & Sarah are shown next in 1880 Census of Benton Co., Mississippi with sons J. W.; William;
James F.; Bryant Michael; a baby age 9/12 Susan who does not appear again; and a niece age 9 surname
EDWARDS.
George & Sarah’s last child, Rosalie, was born 1886 in Arkansas somewhere, possibly Baxter County and
next we see George in 1900 Census Sequoyah, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma).By this
time, George is a widower and with him are sons James F.; Bryant Michael & fifteen year old daughter
Rosalie.Nearby are the households of John W. & William Powell.
