I'm really having a hard time finding information on my g/grandmother, SARAH GASSAWAY-POWELL. Very slight information that I have at this point. 1. Sarah Gassaway was married to George Washington Powell sometime between 1862-1872. George lived in Etowah County, Alabama in 1860 and in 1870 we know he is still there in northeast Alabama but so far I can't find him. 2. Family story says.. George & Sarah married in Alabama. .. Sarah may have been married before to a JOHN GARRISON?.. The Powell children are said to have a 1/2 brother, John Garrison... Now this may be a previous marriage for George but not sure. 2. George was born 1847-1848 in Alabama. 3. Sarah M. Gassaway was born 1846-1848 in Georgia. Her father was born in Tennessee. 4. Between 1872-1873 George & Sarah moved to Benton/Marshall County, Mississippi where they appear in the 1880 census. 5. Before 1886, George & Sarah move to somewhere in Arkansas where their daughter, Rosalee is born.... 6. The next record I find is the 1900 census of Sequoyah, Indian Territory where George is found as a widower with 2-of his sons and the daughter, Rosalee. CHILDREN OF GEORGE WASHINGTON POWELL (1846-) & SARAH GASSAWAY (1846-) OF AL, MS, OK. 01. J. W. b.c. 1864 AL [is this the ½ brother named John Garrison? 02. William W. b.c. 1872 AL 03. Bryant Michael b. 1876-November, MS Marshall Co., Byhalia 04. James Franklin b. 1878-December, MS 05. Susan b. 1879 September, MS, does not appear in 1900 census 06. Rosalee b. 1886 April in AR It is said that when Sarah died, George left his sons in the care of Uncle Charlie Foreman who was a Cherokee Indian. The child "J. W." shown in the 1880 census as being born about 1864 (census date) could have been a son of Sarah's previous to marrying George Powell. Was Sarah married to a GASSAWAY man and her maiden name may be something else. I understand that a William Gassaway died 1862 in the Civil War and had a wife named Sarah........ Could this be our Sarah? This is every possible piece of information I can think of on SARAH GASSAWAY-POWELL. oh... by the way... family story says she was Cherokee and everywhere the Powell's lived was in Cherokee territory.... ANY CLUE... ANY THOUGHT... appreciated Hannah Clarice Powell hpowell@gte.net
