Does anyone know who James Gaskins' parents were? Where was he from originally in SC? According to the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Censuses he was born in South Carolina. I have at least 20 listed as his children by three wives. In the 1850 Census, taken in Jefferson, Florida, James was 50 years old. In household #135 are the following people in this exact order and age: James 50, Mary 26 (presumably 2nd wife), William 17, Daniel 15, Elizabeth 13, James 9, Eve Bishop 10, George 8, Jacob 4, Martha 3, Mary A. 2, Sarah A. 10/12. The first 9 people were born in SC. The last 3 were born in FL. In the 1860 Census, taken in Hillsborough, FL, James was 60 years old. In household #282 are the following people in this exact order: James 60, James 17, Jacob 15, Martha P. 13, Sarah 11, Tabitha 10, Jeferson 3, Alison 5, Wingford 3, Delila 3. In the 1870 Census, taken in Manatee, FL, James is 70 years old. In household #16 are the following people in this exact order: James 70, Martha Jane 27, Jefferson 14, Winnie 9, Delilah 9, Samuel 9, John Wesley 6, Fisher Byrd 3, but then a line is inserted to make the 3 look like a 5, Ransom 3, and Willis 2. I also have 3 names of children born after 1870 as well. They are Adeline Susan, Annie Mae, and Emily. There is room to assume he had other children older than 17 year old William in the 1850 census. They may have ventured out on their own by then. Anyone with information, please share. Thank you.
