The William Gaskill in Fayette City and Jackson CO, WV are the same person. Sarah's probate and Orphan court records place William in Sandy Creek, Jackson County, WV in 1867 at the time of the court proceedings. The same documents place Samuel Gaskill's death (Sarah's husband) as September, 1856. Also, Sarah's local tax records start in 1851, and list her as unemployed and also as Samuel's widow. Samuel was last listed in 1849 as an engineer, doesn't appear in the records again.
I believe Samuel may have been a 49er that never returned, and that the Orphan's Court proceedings fixed his death seven years after his disappearance. He is absent in the 1850 US Census, with Sarah and two sons, plus WIlliam in a seperate household, in Cookstown (Fayette City now). A bio (I don't remember the source off-hand)of Seneca McCrory of Fayette City, who was a friend of the Gaskill family (William's sister, Ellen (Eleanor), was married in the McCrory family home to DR George ST Clair Hussey (from Civil War pension application))stated that Seneca was one of two lucky local men who returned to the area after a gold seeking trip to California. Samuel's nephew, Isaac Crall, from Monogahela, was also a returned 49er (from Crall bio in Bates History of Washington CO.).
