Joseph L. Gascoine b.1847 Durham County

My Joseph L. Gascoine came to the United States and was married to a Susan Crusan in 1877. Other than his death certificate indicating his origins in Durham County, I am at a loss as to how to trace him back in England. I have heard I need to find out when and from what port he left for the US, but I have been unsuccessful searching the lists so far. Any and all suggestions would be helpful.

His sons were named Joseph, John, Arthur and Harry- they were not family names on his wife's side, so they may lend a clue.

Thanks in advance!
