Being a descendant of "Garzas" and "De la Garzas" umpteen times, I feel compelled to coment: First as was pointed out Garza means a Heron (a crane-like long neck wading bird with a long tapering bill, large wings and soft plumage that is related to the ibises and storks.) As a surname it falls into the Toponymic category of names which are derived from a place name or a characteristic of the environment and originally were usually preceded by the Spanish prepositions "de, de la, del, de las, or de los," depending on gender and agreement, equivalent to the English "of" (from.)To my knowledge they had nothing to do with being rich, poor or of noble leneage. After independence from Spain prepositions were generally dropped as sounding too pretentious. Also to my knowledge, Marcos Alonso Garza y del Arcon had only one wife, Juana de Trevino who bore him 7 sons, four who used the compound surname Garza Falcon and three Trevino.
