That "slip of paper" which added the name Villarreal looks like a pretty good lead. I found a Matias Garza Guerra, born on 24 Feb 1849,in Monterrey, son of Buenaventura de la Garza Villarreal and Juana Guerra. On 12 Oct 1872 he married Benigna San Miguel Garcia, daughter of Jose Guadalupe San Miguel Cantu and Luisa Garcia Salinas. A son of Matias & Benigna, Aurelio Garza San Miguel married on 25 Feb 1895, in Monterrey, Maria Gonzalez Tamez. Matias apparently was quite an important merchant in Monterrey, owner of a general merchandize store called "La Paz" on the corner of Ocampo and Dr. Coss streets across from where the Jockey Club is now located. He was also quite active in city politics, serving as a Regidor (councilman) on two ocassions 1878 & 1879 and Alcalde (Mayor) in 1882. I recommend you try to locate some of his descendants under the surnames "Garza Gonzalez" by posting a query in the Mexico Genealogy Forum and the Mexico Genealogy Web Page under Nuevo Leon. Good Luck.
