I have been quite interested in this fascinating exchange of information. I hope no one minds if I add what very little I have read on the subject. Marcos Alonso de la Garza y Arcon was probably the first, if not, then one of the first "de la Garza" emigrants to Nueva Espana, according to many sources I have read. In Tomas Mendirichaga Cueva's, "Origen de los Apellidos Garza y Trevino en Nuevo Leon," Marcos Alonso de la Garza y Arcon's birthplace is listed as Lepe, Huelva, (Andalusia)Spain. I have also read that the name originated in Galicia. Another source, this one a very interesting personal meeting between two women (Maria de la Garza de Dellinger and Graciela de Gutierrez de Lara--Graciela was a teacher at Torrejon AFB near Madrid when this meeting took place)and descendants of de la Garzas at their home in Valdenoceda, Spain (Castile)gives another clue. A gentleman at the meeting by the name of Andres Ballesteros Navarro told the two women that Monteforte de Lemos, in Galicia, was where the de la Garzas orginated. According to this same article (printed in the Sept. 1991 issue of Los Bexarenos Genealogical Register), there were, however, also de la Garzas in Valdenoceda (Castile), not far from Burgos. It was descendants of this branch of de la Garzas that Maria de la Garza de Dellinger and her friend Graciela Guterrez de Lara were meeting. The women were told that the Valdenoceda de la Garzas spread out, going to South America and Mexico, and the de la Garza name died out in Valdenoceda. There is also an interesting aside in the article about de la Garza crests. The women were told that the Valdenoceda de la Garzas had a crest with a garza floating in water (rather than a standing garza) because the Valdenoceda de la Garzas were navegantes (p. 129). Marcos Alonso de la Garza y Arcon (b. @1540) first married Catalina Martinez Guajardo and they had three children. He then married Juana de Trevino and they had eight children. At least nine of these eleven children are known to have married and raised families, the most prolific of which was Marcos and Juana's son, Blas de la Garza who married Beatriz Gonzalez Hidaldo. They had 18 children (from "Origen de los Apellidos Garza y Trevino en Nuevo Leon"). Marcos Alonso de la Garza y Arcon died @ 1610 in Nuevo Leon. Although the author of "With All Arms" fails to cite his evidence within the text of his book, Carl L. Duaine gives an interesting portrayal of Marcos Alonso and some of his descendants who were very active in the development of Nuevo Leon. Mr. Duaine felt that there was probably another de la Garza family in the area because one of Blas and Beatriz's daughters, Leonor married a Nicolas de la Garza (p.185). There is no evidence as yet to substantiate that claim, but it is something to think about. I find all information, if it is well-researched and documented, to be of value. Each individual, however, has to make the ultimate decision as to whether a certain piece of history or information fits into his or her own ancestral history.
