Howard,

I suspect this is the family of Marvel Gary and Lucrecia Gary. I recently obtained the Texas Confederate pension application of Elvira Gary, widow of Charles Fincher Gary. He was known to have been called "Finch." In the application, she stated that she was born September 27, 1833, and that she had married Charles F. Gary on September 9, 1850, in Clarke Co., MS. Elvira had signed the application as Elvira H. Gary. I was hoping to find her maiden name. Since the marriage date was so close to June 1, the official date of the census, I figured both Charles F. Gary and Elvira would be in Clarke Co. Sure enough, this Gary family is on p. 165A. Finch is 22. In seven houses away is a young lady named Elvira Collin, age 18, living with her mother and her apparent step-father.

The other thing are the ages. Charles F. Fincher was born in 1826 and he is 22 in the census, off about 1 year. Thaddeus was born in 1835 and he is 14 in the census, or right on. In the book "Gary, Garry, Geary, Etc.," it lists Marvel as being b. abt. 1822, but according to the census, he would have been born abt. 1833. The author of the "Gary" book admitted that not all of the names of the children were known, and, apparently, they were last found in the Lowndes Co., AL census in 1840.

I'm beginning to think Lucinda might have been a second wife for Marvel Gary. The "Gary" book reflects Lucrecia as being born abt. 1796 in SC and died abt. 1840. Her father, Thomas wrote his will in which she is named in 1797 and died in Newberry Co., SC, sometime in 1802. So the person, Lucinda, in the census would appear to be someone else, since she is only 45 years old, i.e., born abt. 1804-1805, and she appears to have been born in GA, if I'm reading the census correctly.

Let me know if you have any other ideas.
