Annette K. "Mickie" Garvey of Chicago Prayers for Annette K. "Mickie" Garvey (nee Konopa), 89, will be said at 9:30 a.m. today, at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, proceeding to Queen of All Saints Basilica, for a Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery. Visitation was Tuesday, at the funeral home. Born March 10, 1918, in Chicago, she died Monday, April 2, 2007, in Chicago. Annette served as a Eucharistic minister at Queen of All Saints Basilica, where she was a parishioner and daily Mass celebrant for more than 50 years. A truly great member of the "Greatest Generation," Mickie survived the 1918 flu epidemic and the Great Depression, in order to unite, in love and life, with Dick Garvey. Together they fought through World War II (as an officer in the Army Air Corps). They brought six children into the world between 1942 and 1956. In 1961, she faced her greatest challenge when Dick died suddenly. Left to raise their children on her own, she did so with unwavering grace, courage and faith (and good grammar!). In her later years, her greatest joys came from regular bridge games with an amazing array of friends, and summers at the family cottages in Michigan, with her children, their spouses, her grandchildren, their spouses and, most recently, her great-grandchildren. Life, she thought, was "marvelous." She lived by that philosophy each and every day. The world, and in particular Chicago, are much, much better places because she was here. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard J. Garvey; dear mother of Dennis (Linda) Garvey, Kathleen (C.J.) Murzyn, Richard (Laurie) Garvey, Laura (Jim) McCormick, Michael (Cynthia) Garvey and Martha (Gary) Pett; dear grandmother of 26; great-grandmother of 44; and fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.
