There is another possibility. The 1880 Census of Oktibbeha Co, MS (Police Beat #5)shows a family of M. J. Gartin, (female) widowed, aged 34 born in Mississippi. The rest of the household was John Gartin, aged 10 (son), b. MS; Mattie Gartin, aged 7 (dau), b. MS; Leopold Gartin, aged 4 (son) born MS. They were in the household of John Henry, father of M. J. Gartin. She was the widow of Elijah Andrew Gartin who died in 1877. Do any of these names fit into your family? Contact me at gartenb@iquest.net.
