You didn't explain why you posted your message, but I'll take the dangerous step in assuming that you are related.

This Uriah Garton is Uriah Ezra Garton who's family came from "below the Great Lakes" area. Not at the Great Lakes but a ways down below. This is a third branch of Garton's related to both the New Jersey and Virginia branches. This is not Capt. Uriah Garton of Va. who also lived in Ky at the same time.

Uriah Ezra drowned in the Ohio River in 1801. He was my gr gr grandfather. Our family stories are as follows. Uriah Ezra had been married before and had two children, a son and a daughter. When his first wife died, he turned them over to relatives of his wife and they were adopted, losing the Garton name. He next married Sarah Cuddon the widow of John Jones who had four grown sons. It was not a marriage made in heaven. The four Jones sons resented this new husband of their mother's and did not make things easy.

Uriah Ezra and Sarah Cuddon Jones had only one child, Judge Zachariah Garton. The family moved to Switzerland Co, Ind. and later to Dearborn Co. where the Jones boys resided in Log Lick Township. These half brothers had a great influence on young Zachariah (who for some bizzare reason is listed as Tochariah in the Buchannon Co. History).

Through Sarah Cuddon's mother's line we are descended from John Bunyan, preacher and author of Pilgrim's Progress.

My father, who was born in 1898, was adamant about certain things concerning our family. Our Garton line was strong in naming their sons with double Bible names, like Uriah Ezra. For generations they hid from the other "cousins." My father said that we would never find them. I almost believe him.

There is a Josephus Garton listed in an 1850 Census up in that area that I inteded to trace. He is supposed to have been a 3rd cousin or thereabouts of Uriah Ezra. I need to find the time to get back to a good library.

Oh, Sarah Cuddon Jones worked in a store at Bryan's Station. You have two other names I'm working on, Land and Sparks. (John Land who died in Mo. and Jonus Sparks line which married into the Bryan line of Bryan's Station).
Hope this helps.
Leland Garton
