St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, Aug 29 1956:

Bakery Closed for First Time in 55 Years
Scarlet Fever Shut Down Store in 1901
St. Charles was surpised, nay, shocked to find Gartner's W. Main st. bakery closed down for vacation, Aug. 20-27.

The last time Gartner's was shut down for more than a day was 55 years ago in 1901, when the three Gartner children, Karl, Andrew and Sophie, caught scarlet fever.

How did this breaking of traditon come about? Karl Gartner Sr. states: "Everybody wanted to go on a vacation, so we just closed up shop. No one volunteered to watch the store."

Further investigation showed that Mrs. Gartner Sr. and daughter, Anne, visited another daughter, Mrs. Mary Delores Dean, in Grand Rapids, Mich. but that other members of the staff stayed around home. These were Pat Brennan, Anne Carney and Karl Gartner Jr. and Mrs. Gartner Sr.
