John and Barbara Gartner appear in the 1870 federal census in Quincy, Ill. as John (age 67) and Barbara (age 65), living with Daniel (age 35), David (age 39), and David's wife and children. The Lutheran Church of St. John in Quincy has the following record (written in German): "Johannes Gartner gebornen Den 18 Nov. 1803 zu Neuburg, Rhein-Pfalz . . . [died] 31 December 1872."
Barbara Gartner survived him; she is mentioned as being alive in two of her sons' obituaries. The obit for Daniel Gartner ran in the Quincy (Illinois) Daily Herald, Nov. 16, 1894 and reads, in part: "He came here fifteen years ago from Williamsport, Pa., and has been in the grocery business since. His mother resides in St. Louis and is 89 years of age. He has a sister in Williamsport, Pa., and two brothers in Linneus, Mo. He leaves a wife surviving." The obit for David Gartner can be found in the Quincy Daily Herald for Sept. 13, 1895, and reads, in part: "His aged mother also survives and four sisters--Mrs. George Oertle, of Quincy; Mrs. George Weisenburger, of St. Louis; Mrs. Hartman, of Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Valier, of Canada, and two brothers, John of Linneus, Mo, and Jacob, of this city."
Barbara Gartner, therefore, was almost certainly living with her daughter, Mrs. George Weisenburger, in St. Louis at the time of her death, which must have been in the late 1890s. We should be able to find an obit, death record, church record or grave in St. Louis. There also should be clues in Williamsport, PA, where the family seems to have resided for a time.
