I think we may be related. My Great-grandfather was Johann George Gartner, who came to America in about 1875. I have made contact with some ancestry in the town of Schney, Germany (near Lichtenfels) which is in Central Germany, near the old east/west border. There is a lot of Gartner history in the town of Schney (cemeteries) and even one of the town of Lichtenfels councilmen is Heinz Gartner.
Johann George's brother-in-law and sister settled in the Michigan area. Johann arrived in Galveston and settled in Houston. His brothers and sisters are:
Friedrich Gartner b 1858
Georgine Gartner b 1846
Kunigunde Gartner b 1849
Katharina Gartner b 1854
Eva Margarethe Gartner b 1856

Kunigunda married Emil Friedrich Wehrsdorfer (Americanized to Westover).
Let me know if any of this sounds close. I have some great contacts in Germany I could give you, and an extensive family tree, too!
Thanks-
Mark Gartner
