Hello Sheila,
I trace my Garsides to Peter b.1727. He had [at least] 2 brothers, James b.1723 and Joseph b.1725. James married Betty Cook, Joseph married Sarah Rowbottam, and my Peter married Martha Hadfield.
These brothers are all sons of John Garside and I believe,Mary Harrop.
I have attempted to trace the Garsides as far back from Mottram as I could, and found that John traces back to Anthony who was married to Ellin Mellor in 1603. It also appears his brother was Hugh, married to Ann Chadwick on 9 Nov.1612, they had a son,Hugh in 1617 and he had a son Hugh in 1645. The name Hugh does not appear in my tree whatsoever from the time of Peter. Why that is I don't have a clue, as I think they are related.
I recently visited St.Michael's on War Hill, Mottram and saw many Garside stones in the churchyard. My belief is that the family originated from Oldham and went to Mottram in the late 1500's. Have you visited that area? I would be happy to share more information if you're interested.
