Hi Stephanie, could very well be that Joseph is one of the lost children I need to find. The only way I can tell is for you to have his birthdate and birthplace.
When was your Joseph born, do you know, and where ? Where was he married for the first time, if in Quebec you will need the marriage record, it could possibly tell who his family was because at times the whole family signed the marriage record.
If you know the churches involved you can write to them, and offer a token amount for them to send the documents, say ten dollars or so. You might be plesantly surprised when you receive them. Census is a good thing for seeing where some relatives are too, a lot of times they followed other one around and live in close proximity with them.
Hopefully I have helpd you.
Kristin
