Hi John, hopefully you will get some help from a lot of people out there searching this name. We could use a little more information if possible. Do you know where in Northern Ontario he was from ? Also the Gareau/Garrow family had a lot of families, do you know his first name ?,was he married,? children, religion, parents names and so on.
I myself have a Joseph Gareau/Garrow who I cannot find back any further than 1846 Curran Prescott County, Ontario. Joseph married a Louise Monette dit Boismenu [St Benoit, Duex Montagnes]and starting 1846 had children in Curran and then in either Ste Adele and St Jerome, Terrebonne County.
They were in Ottawa for a time and then migrated to Ogdensburg, St Lawrence County, NY [upper NY State] about mid 1860s.
More than likely this is not your family because you say in the late 1800s, but I thought I would ask anyway.
Let us know and someone out there could be related. Good luck,
Kristin DeCare
