Am not related. May be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info but additional old newspaper extracts may be found at URL: www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php Vern D ///////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoc //////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA ***************************************** >>SATURDAY, 24 SEPT 1864<< A "CHARACTER" GONE - Patrick GARRITY, a native of Ireland, aged about 26 years, died yesterday afternoon at the County Hospital, of the effects of a congestive chill. GARRITY, who was better known by his sobriquet of "Curly," was a laboring man along the levee and at one time a deck hand on board the Cornelia. His great besetting fault was intemperance; the man's heart was good, for he, being an expert swimmer, has rescued 2 persons from drowning during the last 2 years. For months he had not slept inside of walls or bed, the poor outcast's only couch being a bench in front of the "break-o'-day bar" opposite the steamboat landing. Yesterday morning he was found in a high fever and shuddering violently from a chill, and was sent to County Hospital, where he died just after mid-day. Poor "Curly," with all his faults had a good hear, and may the infinite weigh his good deeds in the balance against his faults. Heaven knows we are none of us perfect. The funeral of GARRITY will take place from the undertaker shop of Blake & Co., at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Notify Administrator about this message?
