My first advice would be to use Family Tree DNA (FTDNA.com) instead of Ancestry.FTDNA has over 90% of the market of DNA testing for genealogy, has better support, and a far larger database.Because of a large group of volunteer project administrators like myself, you receive a lot of help and support.
Other than that, only males of the surname can do YDNA testing for that surname. That is because only males have YDNA and they only pass it down to their male descendants. The best thing for folks like you who want to explore their surname roots is to find a male cousin with the Garrison surname and pay for their test. That is what I had to do.
There is another test at FTDNA, an autosomal DNA test called Family Finder that has some value for folks like us.I have had the test and can see relationship that I know are right. There are also a lot of new possibilities. You can go to FTDNA.com to see informative articles about the nature of autosomal DNA testing. It does have some limitations and does not replace the YDNA test.
Please feel free to email me with questions or if you have problems finding the information you are seeking.
