Posting of documentation
A few things from various posts need clarification.Although owned by Ancestry, the ability to post attachments to Genforum is not provided. One must use the Ancestry message boards in order to include scans of documents. The posting of a tree to Ancestry.com is also a way to attach scans of documentation.
The consent document for the 1818 marriage of John Garrison to Margaret Portwood is already posted to Abraham Smith’s tree on Ancestry. The name of the tree is ags31dec.The YDNA results for Abraham’s relative along with additional documentation for his line are part of that tree. His participant was tested by Ancestry, not FTDNA, so his YDNA results cannot be posted to the Garrison’s Compass Project site under B-Delaware Lines even though they are a match. His results along with several of those who match are also posted to YSEARCH.org, owned by Family Tree DNA.
MyFamily is also owned by Ancestry with a fee for setting up and maintaining those sites. They are private and password protected which gives the owner the ability to limit membership to related individuals. Therefore information posted to the Garrisons of Delaware site on MyFamily is only available to Garrisons who can make a connection to our line. That includes but is not necessarily limited to the following ancestors: Hendrik, Garret, John, Jedediah, Ebenezer, Zebulon and Caleb. The locations would include such places as Franklin GA, Greenville & Pendleton SC, Orange NC, Duplin NC, and New Castle DE.I would welcome emails from anyone with documentation or even a strong suspicion of a relationship to these folks.
Before YDNA testing entered into the phase of having sufficient results to detect matches, we had only research. All of us who were involved in research in the years before DNA testing can tell stories of the time and expense involved in sending materials, even doing research, for Garrisons who later proved to be unrelated to us.Now with YDNA test results we are able to eliminate a significant amount of that unnecessary effort. It is now possible to concentrate more fully on the lines of those who are connected to us, proven by YDNA testing. We no longer need to research the lines of those who have been proven to not be related. It’s a tremendous time saver and allows one to stay focused on their own line.Eliminating the lines that do not match is probably the best benefit of YDNA testing in terms of saving both time and money.
To anyone who thinks they might be connected to our line, don’t forget, it’s a good time to get into the DNA angle of genealogy.Kits ordered through Garrison’s Compass qualify for a discounted rate through the end of the month.Garrison’s Compass also offers testing and support for the female line test, mtDNA.More information is available through the Garrison’s Compass FTDNA web pages or from their Co-Administrator Sharon Garrison.
